Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti is set up with the approval of Union Government and registered under Multi State Cooperative Societies Act 2002 on the 25th day of January 2023 is hereby conferred status of National Cooperative Society (hereinafter referred as the society).BBSS is jointly promoted by Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (KRIBHCO), National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) as promoter members and among them, KRIBHCO is the Chief Promoter of this society.
To work as an apex organization for quality seed production and marketing.
To act as a national organisation to facilitate and promote indigenous, traditional and natural (sweet) seeds produced by cooperative societies and other institutions and to indulge in various activities including production, processing, storage, marketing, branding and distribution of seeds.
To achieve social and economic development of its members through self-help and mutual co-ordination according to co-operative principles, by conducting its affairs in a professional, democratic and autonomous manner to achieve economic prosperity and to promote and protect the economic interests of all its members, thereby achieving the goal of cooperative prosperity.
To produce quality seeds produce quality seeds in agro-ecosystems to enhance existing crop production.
To improve the income of farmers and stakeholders which will ensure better social security.
To strengthen the seed production infrastructure in the country and to promote new varieties of seeds.
To work and assist in the promotion of its members, collaborators and cooperative societies engaged in marketing, processing and supply chain operations in seed sector in India.
This society will engage in collaborative plant breeding for all categories of seed and will provide relevant institutional support to cooperative societies to achieve desired seed replacement ratio (SRR) and varietal replacement ratio (VRR).
To establish proper coordination between crop improvement projects, seed industry, seed regulatory agencies, NGO, KVKs, State Agricultural Universities and Central Agricultural Universities.
To create a sense of mutual belonging amongst all stakeholders by representing the entire cooperative fraternity throughout the country. To provide strength to social cohesion and national integrity.
The society is authorized to produce seeds and conduct seed-related activities across its supply chain. It may receive support from relevant ministries and institutions, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), and National Seed Corporation (NSC) through their schemes and agencies. This charter permits the society to establish its own bye-laws, provided they comply with the provisions of the Multi State Cooperative Societies Act 2002, as amended over time.
The Central Government has approved a national multi-state cooperative seed society to ensure quality seed cultivation under a single brand name. Farmers will play a key role in seed variety testing, production, and distribution of certified seeds.
The society will operate nationwide with its registered office in New Delhi. Cooperatives at all levels can join as members. The main activities include the production, testing, certification, procurement, processing, storage, branding, labeling, and packaging of Breeder, Foundation, and certified seeds.
If farmers receive high quality seeds through this society, agricultural productivity is likely to improve. There will be a proper arrangement for the conservation of Indian traditional natural seeds (sweet seeds) that are becoming extinct.
The processing, buying, and selling of quality seeds will create additional employment opportunities in these sectors, thereby supporting the rural economy.
It will establish a system for the conservation and promotion of indigenous natural seeds and facilitate new research and development.
IFFCO, KRIBHCO, NAFED, NDDB, and NCDC have each contributed ₹50 crore as promoter members of the seed cooperative. The society has an authorized share capital of ₹500 crore and an initial paid-up share capital of ₹250 crore. ICAR provides breeder-seed and technical support. Its operations will cover the entire country, with its registered office in New Delhi.
This society aims to benefit farmers nationwide by providing high-quality seeds and increasing agricultural productivity. Quality seeds contribute 15-20% to national production, potentially rising to 45% with efficient input management where this society will play an important role.
The society will assist farmers in producing, purchasing, branding, packaging, and selling quality seeds while enhancing cooperatives' capacity. It will integrate all cooperative structures to ensure quality seed cultivation under one brand, involving farmers in seed variety testing, production, and distribution of certified seeds.

Founded on 2 October 1958, NAFED promotes the trade of agricultural produce and forest resources across India. It operates from its headquarters in New Delhi, with regional offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, along with 28 zonal offices.
TheNational Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) established under an Act of Parliament on 13 March 1963, aims to plan and promote programs for agricultural and industrial goods' production, processing, marketing, storage, export, and import based on cooperative principles.
